5 Things To Discuss With Your Divorce Lawyer

| August 2, 2018

When you are going through a divorce, it is critical to hire a divorce lawyer to look out for your best interests. When you meet with a lawyer at Morse Bratt Andrews & Terry LLP, here are four things you should discuss:

Division of Assets and Debts – Everything from your vehicles and your home to your stocks and 401ks will need to be divided. Let your lawyer know which specific things you are interested in getting from the divorce so they know what to argue for during your case. Debts owed by the parties will also have to be dealt with.

Maintenance/Alimony – If maintenance, also known as alimony, is on the table, you should discuss how much money will be paid, and for how long the payments will last.

Child Custody/Support – If you and your spouse have children, you should also discuss custody agreements and any child support that will need to be paid.

Important Documents – When you are filing for divorce, you will need to provide your lawyer with your tax returns from the last five years, insurance documents, retirement statements, and other relevant documents. Make sure you bring your lawyer all of the correct paperwork so that they can build a stronger case for you.

Uncertainty – In a divorce case, it is important to understand it isn’t a question of who is right or wrong.  Rather it is a process to untangle you from the past and set you free to engage with the rest of your life.  It can be an emotional roller coaster, but working out a clear strategy with your lawyer will pay dividends.

Morse Bratt Andrews & Terry, LLP can assist you in your divorce. When you need experienced divorce lawyers in Vancouver, WA, give us a call at 360-213-2040.
